May 11, 2016– On Day 2 of our trip to Chicago, 97-year-old yoga master Tao Porchon-Lynch, journalist Janie Sykes Kennedy (my mom and writing partner) and I went to the BookExpo America to see our award-winning Dancing Light on the shelf of the New Title Showcase and in the IBPA Booth. It was very satisfying to see our book displayed after all of our hard work–four years, 75 hours of interviews, over 1000 hours of work and almost 135,000 words! Tao had an autographing session in the main area which ended up being very popular despite the fact she was a last minute addition.

Tao in the Bahamas: Day 1&2

97-year-old Yoga Master Tao Porchon-Lynch Shares Teachings at Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat in the Bahamas

January 7, 2016–A perfect 72 degrees and crystal blue water greeted us as we stepped into our own zen paradise at the Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat Bahamas on Paradise Island. 97-year-old yoga master Tao Porchon-Lynch was invited to this garden of eden to share her wisdom and I joined to assist.

Sivananda provides an immersion into the practices of a yogic lifestyle with a daily schedule of yoga, meditation and philosophical study that starts at 5:30am and ends at 10pm. Located a five-minute boat ride from Nassau, the Ashram shares a pristine beach with the large Atlantas Paradise Island Resort–an interesting juxtaposition of luxurious decadence and spiritual discipline. The daily vegetarian meals at 10am and 6pm were lovingly created by volunteer Karma yogis and simply delightful, particularly the homemade bread. I thought I may detox a bit but that was not happening.

They put us up in a garden room–a quaint cabin with two single beds and private bathroom. As Tao unpacked, she laughingly revealed a carry-on case almost entirely full of high heels making note that she was prepared for Ashram living. That’s a modern yoga master!! Since Tao was scheduled on the program the second evening, we got a chance to explore visiting the Boutique and taking in the beauty of the grounds.

On the evening of the 8th, it seemed like the entire Ashram of 200+ people came out for Satsang. My original yoga training was at Integral Yoga Institute in New York which is the lineage of Swami Satchidananda, a student of Swami Sivananda–so I felt right at home. In the Sivananda tradition, there is meditation and chanting before the main discussion. Our Conversation with a Master talk was the featured event and as usual Tao set the place abuzz.

Tao in Slovenia: Day 4

October 9, 2015–In 2012, Tao was named Oldest Yoga Teacher by Guinness World Records, and she still regularly teaches six to eight classes a week in addition to her dance lessons and other activities. Therefore, the trip to Slovenia would not be complete without yoga! So, on our last day, Tao taught two yoga classes–one at 7am and the other at 11am. Some of the attendees from the Conversation with a Master event hosted by the Young Executives Society (YES) and Mercedes changed their schedules–coming before work or taking an early lunch–to experience Tao’s teachings first-hand.

From traveling with Tao I’ve noticed that she receives energy from teaching yoga. She is already full of vitality yet her luminosity increases when she is taking command of the room adjusting students and helping them do things they never thought possible. She helps them to experience her mantra: There Is Nothing You Cannot Do. Tao says:

“In my head I am still in my ’20s and I’m never growing up!”

Tao has certainly unlocked the secrets to Peter Pan-like youthfulness. Being around her is a study in potentiality showing us all what is possible. She believes that what you put in your mind materializes and she constantly looks for the good. See this Huffington Post article, “Is 96 the New 22? Seven Secrets of Vitality From Yoga Master Tao Porchon-Lynch” and “96-Year-Old Tao Porchon-Lynch is ‘On Fire’ on America’s Got Talent.” At 97 years old, Tao has the stamina of someone decades younger. After four days of continuous activity, we packed our bags and were headed off to Montenegro for the Age of Happiness Festival. Tao was a headliner and was greeted like a superstar! Before that craziness, we were glad to be able to spend the days before with my wonderful friends in Slovenia.

Thank you to our Slovenian hosts Matej Cer, Jan Pinteric, Til Lajovic, Anton Majhen, Breda Bozic and so many more from the YES and AvantCar teams. We’re also grateful for the coverage from 24UR.com, PlanetSiol.net and the upcoming feature in The Good Life. If you’ve never been to Slovenia, you must visit Ljubljana–the 2016 European Green Capital–and then venture out to the coast and the mountains. I’m sure you will be as delighted as we were. Tao enjoyed herself so much that we are planning a yoga retreat and Teacher Training in Slovenia for Spring 2016. Keep your eyes out for it!

Tao in Slovenia: Day 3B

October 8, 2015–After a morning at the Slovene Coast, we returned to Ljubljana in the early afternoon just in time to get a quick bite of food and freshen up for another media interview. We went up to the Presidential Suite at Hotel Slon with Jan Pinteric and Til Lajovic. Apparently, President Bill Clinton had stayed in the spacious townhouse-like home away from home.

The hotel’s general manager Gregor Jamnik was there to meet us, along with the interviewer. A former actress and model, Tao was ready as soon as the camera went on! They discussed yoga, vitality and her new autobiography, Dancing Light: The Spiritual Side of Being Through the Eyes of a Modern Yoga Master. Here is coverage from PlanetSiol.net. Gregor ordered some exquisite sparkling wine so Tao was in her element as a wine connoisseur. She was very interested in hearing about Slovenia’s wine region and is now excited about coming back to do a wine and yoga retreat.

With a viticultural history that predates Roman influences, Slovenia boasts approximately 28,000 wineries with a predominant focus on white wines.

With about an hour or so to rest, we changed and were off for the evening’s big event hosted by the Young Executives Society (YES) and Mercedes. Tao and I have been doing a roadshow of sorts with the “Conversation with a Master” event. We’ve made it into a multimedia experience by incorporating a slideshow of images from Tao’s archives which illustrate her stories. Even though Tao is engaging on her own, it makes the conversation come alive even more. We’ve done similar events for hosts as diverse as the Harvard Business School Club of New York to the Jewish Community Center (JCC) Mid-Westchester in Scarsdale (U.S.). I even moderated a discussion on Tao’s life at the Pentagon (pre-slideshow) after she taught yoga to 90 Department of Defense personnel.

This event in Slovenia was well-attended and well-received. Afterwards there was a steady stream of people wanting to meet Tao and take pictures with her. All of our gracious hosts were there including Matej Cer, Jan Pinteric, Til Lajovic, Anton Majhen, Breda Bozic and others from AvantCar, Mercedes and the YES team.
