Give Your Presence [Video]

(view video below)

As Thich Nhat Hanh said, “If you love someone, the greatest gift you can give them is your presence.”

How present are you? When my nephew was little we used to make a gingerbread house during the holidays. It was a big production that took a couple of days to construct entirely from scratch. After we admired our handiwork–and ate some leftover “lumber”–he would give our creation to his Sunday school class. What I enjoyed most was simply spending the time together. During special occasions we spend a lot of time trying to find the perfect gift. Sometimes we spend more money than we should and get consumed with preparations. Slow down and invest your energy in making memories. Instead of stressing out about what present to buy, give your presence.  If you’re in the same location, turn off the computer and put down the phone. Cook or bake together. Make decorations. Tell stories. Break out some old-fashioned board games. Even if you can’t physically be together, use technology to close the distance. Screen-share a movie. Toast over the airwaves. Offer a gift certificate that can be redeemed for unlimited hugs the next time that’s possible. Whether in person or by video, be fully there with your undivided attention. Create new traditions. As the years go by, you may not recall the sweater or perfume you received but you are likely to smile thinking about the moments you shared.

CENTERING THOUGHT

I give my presence.

YOUR CALL TO ACTION

This week’s call to action this week is give your presence. Ask yourself: In what ways can I give my presence? Consider fun ways to spend time together with loved ones either in person or virtually. Perhaps there is someone you know who is alone. Put aside time to connect. That’s your practice this week. Let Thich Nhat Hanh’s words resonate in your being: “If you love someone, the greatest gift you can give them is your presence.” Let me know how it goes by commenting here. I'll check in at the end of the week to see how you did. Until next time, remember – it’s your divine life, live it to the fullest. The power is in your hands!

With Purpose & Power,

Terri
